About Garden Box

Garden Box was formed in 2018 when it purchased Parkhouse Garden Supplies. With new owners and a new name Garden Box is focused to help Canterbury gardeners “Create Better Gardens.” 

Our team is committed to customer service and ensuring the right product for the job from a bag of sawdust for the pets to a truckload of our fantastic organic compost.

We have an easy to access location on Lunns Road (off Curletts) where we can provide bagged or bulk product. We can help you get it home with one of our hire trailers or organise delivery to your site.

Why Garden Box?

We choose the name because of the smart use of shipping containers “Boxes” for office and storage on site.

Safe Handling of Compost and Soils

It is important to stay safe when gardening - please be aware of the risks of Legionnaire's disease and take the time to protect yourself.

Legionellosis (Legionnaire’s disease) is a form of pneumonia, and is caused by a bacteria called Legionella found in moist conditions in the environment. You can catch the disease by inhaling airborne droplets or particles that contain the bacteria. The illness can present itself in mild or severe cases, and can sometimes be fatal.

Here are some tips to reduce your chances of contracting this disease:
  • Read the warning labels on bags of compost and potting mixes
  • Wear gloves when handling soils, mulches, composts and potting mixes
  • Wear a dust mask if you are using these mixes indoors, or if it is windy
  • Dampen mixes before using them
  • Always open bags away from your face

Dr Humphrey says there are five simple actions gardeners should do to avoid getting legionnaires':
  • Open potting mix or compost carefully – use scissors instead of ripping the bag.
  • Wear a well-fitting disposable face mask and gloves, and remember not to touch your mask when gardening.
  • Reduce dust by dampening down potting mix or compost with a sprinkle of water.
  • Work with potting mix or compost in a well-ventilated outdoor area.
  • Thoroughly wash your hands after handling potting mix or compost.
